Local Business Listings
How important is it to make sure that all of your business information is updated across the web on the various local business listing sites, such as Google Local, Yelp! Yahoo Local, etc.?
Well, let’s consider for a moment that you are a church and when your location is “googled” it comes back with a “Closed on Sunday”. Probably not the message a church with three Sunday morning services wants to be communicating.
So to have your information up-to-date on Google Local would be extremely important. But add to that mix that the new maps application on iOS6 (aka the iPhone), is now powered by Yelp!
So as a business owner, you should not only be concerned about Google, but Yelp as well.
Both Yelp and Google post customer reviews of businesses, so it is equally important to make sure that you know what those reviews say. You can take the approach of sticking your head in the sand when it comes to customer reviews… and I’ve talked to several business owners who prefer this approach. But it is probably not a smart business decision.
No, you can’t control what others say about your business, but you can have influence. If someone is complaining about a bad experience, is it better to ignore that issue, or address it?
If you address the problem and acknowledge that you have done something about it, chances are that others who might be considering shopping/eating/worshiping at your business location will be even more impressed with your willingness to address a negative situation than they will be influenced by a negative review.
Marketing Action Step for Today:
Google your business name, claim your pages on any local listings that come up, and update your information, including your hours of operation, services/products offered, etc.
